Welcome to ASLIA
Hello and welcome to the ASLIA (Australian Sign Language Interpreters’ Association) website.
My name is Paul Heuston, and I am the current ASLIA President.
ASLIA is a not-for-profit body and is the national peak organisation representing the needs and interests of Auslan/English interpreters and DRIs (Deaf Relay Interpreters) in Australia. ASLIA is comprised of a national Executive Committee, a Representative Council and branches in most states and territories. ASLIA has no paid staff, and relies on its members in the above committee roles.
ASLIA’s vision is to seek to lead and promote best practice in sign language interpreting across Australia. To achieve this, we provide policies and a platform for the views of Auslan/English interpreters to the wider community, business and government on a variety of issues.
Our shared future is an exciting and challenging one. Successfully implementing the 2011-2016 Strategic Plan will see ASLIA enter agreements with key stakeholders to offer new opportunities and services to members in ways we have not seen in the past. We will continue to deliver opportunities for members to learn and grow in order to empower a more diverse community.
ASLIA is a member of WASLI (World Association of Sign Language Interpreters) and one key aspect of this membership is to support sign language interpreter practitioners, and those who aspire to be, in developing countries within the Australasia and Oceania region.
This website has a wealth of information including: how to become an Auslan/English interpreter; policies; resources; “interpret-Ed” our online professional development offering; and a members-only area. Thank you for visiting the ASLIA website.
