Over the past few years ASLIA(National) has been in consultation with members and state branches about a national membership restructure. We aim to have the restructure completed by 30 June 2010; meaning that from 1 July 2010 we will have national membership.

Dear ASLIA                                                                                                            May 10^th 2010

 

First of all may I thank you on behalf of WASLI for agreeing to host the 2010 WASLI Board meeting to co-incide with your planned conference. WASLI is very mindful of the support given to it by members of ASLIA, and is in particular grateful for the enormous contribution made by the sign language interpreters of Australia to enable colleagues from income poor countries in your region to participate in learning opportunities and the exchange of ideas and information.

 

We are very much looking forward to meeting our Australian colleagues. Regrettably, much as we would all wish to have been with you during your conference, the entire WASLI Board is unable to travel to Australia, but we are very pleased that the Vice President, Juan Druetta of Argentina, Secretary Zane Hema of the UK, and Regional Representatives Deb Russell ( North America),  and Marco Nardi (Europe), as well as George Major (the Regional representative for Australasia/Oceania) will be with you in Brisbane, and they will be joined by Jose Luis Brevia (Regional representative for Latin America), Jack Owiti ( Africa) & myself via a Skype/Oovoo connection.

 

We are currently investigating external funding possibilities to enable Selman Hoti (the Balkans) to also attend in person.

 

Due to ill health, the Representative for Asia ( Emiko Ichikawa) is unable to be present, and Anna Komarova (Transcaucasia) is also unable to join us. We are not yet sure of the plans of Treasurer Daniel Burch. 

 

Naturally, it is a disappointment to us that we cannot all travel to Brisbane but I know my fellow Board members who will be there are delighted that they will be able to participate in your conference, and that they are looking forward to facilitating the additional training workshops in Australia and New Zealand.

 

I trust this does not inconvenience you too much, and wish your Conference every success. We are indeed proud to have ASLIA as such effective partners in WASLI's commitment to developing the profession of sign language interpreting world wide.

MEETING WITH STATE PRESIDENTS

 

On 30th January 2010 ASLIA (National) hosted a historic meeting with the Presidents of all the ASLIA state branches. This was the first time in the history of the Association that such a meeting has occurred. While the main focus of the meeting was to discuss the ASLIA restructure, it also afforded us the opportunity to discuss other issues impacting on the profession across the country.

 

 

The ASLIA National Conference (ANC) 2010 will be held in Brisbane, Queensland. The dates for ANC 2010 are Friday 27th - Sunday 29th August.

The Interpreter Trainers' Workshop (ITW) 2010 will be held in Brisbane as well, following on from ANC 2010. The dates for ITW are Monday 30th & Tuesday 31st August.
