ASLI is the Association of Sign Language Interpreters in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Established in 1987, our members have worked tirelessly and, for the most part, voluntarily to maintain and improve standards of service within our profession, raise awareness of sign language interpreting within the Deaf and mainstream communities and lobby government and regulatory bodies in order to achieve high levels of recognition and provision wherever possible.
ASLI is not responsible for registering interpreters, that is the responsibility of the National Registers of Communication Professionals working with Deaf and Deafblind People (NRCPD); nor do we discipline interpreters. That is the province of the employer, agency and/or the NRCPD. In the first instance feedback should be provided directly to the interpreter(s).
ASLI encourages members to maintain and enhance their practise by offering opportunities for continuous professional development (CPD). We can also put you in touch with a pool of mentors who have undertaken training specifically developed for those working in our field.
ASLI is funded solely by membership fees. The work we undertake is democratically decided upon by members participating in a regional structure of meetings/events and a national AGM. We regularly hold stimulating and informative conferences that attract presenters and delegates from around the globe.
