Interpreter Trainer's Workshop

On Friday 7 September 2007, prior to the ASLIA National Conference (ANC) on 8 & 9 September 2007, an Interpreter Trainers' Workshop (ITW) day will be held in Sydney, NSW, at Macquarie University from 10am to 4pm.

Dr Rachel McKee will be the international keynote presenter at the ITW.

Rachel is the Programme Director of Deaf Studies in the School of

Linguistics and Applied Language Studies at Victoria University in

Wellington, New Zealand. Rachel has taught and conducted research in USA

and New Zealand, and has worked as a professional sign language

interpreter and trainer in both countries. Rachel's most recent

publications include co-authoring "Sign Language Interpreting: Theory

and Practice in Australia and New Zealand" with Jemina Napier and Della

Goswell; and editing the "Proceedings of the Inaugural Conference of the

World Association of Sign Language Interpreters". She has also published

various articles, chapters, and conference papers on the topics of sign

language interpreting, second language learning of sign language,

linguistic structures of NZSL, name signs in NZSL, and deaf children as

bilingual learners.

 

Rachel is a member of the Deaf Studies Research Unit, which has recently

focused on expanding the database of the Dictionary of NZSL , by

collecting the signs of the older generation, signs used by younger

signers in informal contexts, and signs used in academic and

professional settings.

 

Rachel was the founding President of the Sign Language Interpreters'

Association of New Zealand (SLIANZ) , is a member of the NZSL Tutors

Association (NZSLTA), the NZ Society for Translators and Interpreters

(NZSTI), and served on the management board of the Wellington Community

Interpreting Service.

 

Rachel's keynote address at the ITW will be in regard to "Preparing

interpreters for sociolinguistic variation" - a topic certain to be of

interest to all interpreter trainers.
