An important consideration for all delegates considering attending the ITW and the ANC in Sydney from 7-9 September 2007 is that the APEC summit is on in Sydney at the same time. Due to the closure of the SA branch of ASLIA and their withdrawal from hosting the ANC this year, yet the dates already confirmed of 7-9 September 2007, in shifting the event to Sydney we have not been able to change the promoted dates. We were mindful that many people would have already saved the date and possibly made arrangements re: child care, leave from work and so on.
To this end, we want to clarify for all potential participants that security measures in Sydney and possible delays in travel are likely during the event and delegates should bear this in mind when making their own arrangements. The airport will be operating in business as usual mode and rail services from the airport will still be in effect, but will operate on a public holiday timetable from 7-9 Sept. A relevant site for information regarding transport and how APEC will affect train and bus timetables is http://www.131500.com.au/outandabout/events/specificeventsdetails_new.asp?events_id=2291
The official website for APEC is:- http://www.apec2007.org/ and according to the official APEC site "Throughout the week parts of the city will operate under 'event time' traffic controls and access arrangements, similar to those in place during New Year's Eve, the annual City to Surf and the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. A detailed traffic and transport plan will be implemented throughout parts of the CBD by the NSW Police. Some short-term traffic disruption is expected and will include the closure of roads, the implementation of clearways and public transport diversions similar to those previously experienced during Sydney's large hallmark events. Every effort will be made to keep the CBD traffic flowing as smoothly as possible during this time. The APEC Australia 2007™ website will contain updated information and public announcements on all aspects of 'event time' arrangements."
A public holiday has been declared by the NSW Government for the Sydney region on Friday 7 September, and this may make movement a little easier. The APEC summit is being held in central Sydney and parts of the inner city will be closed to tourists/pedestrians/drivers etc, which is one of the reasons our event is being hosted out at Macquarie University, some distance from the city centre. This area should not be affected by the summit's presence. FAQ's
Q:I'm booking my first holiday to Australia and want to go to Sydney. Should I give Sydney a miss and wait until all the APEC Leaders have left? When are they leaving?
A:It will be business at usual for travellers to or from Sydney Airport. APEC operations will have no impact on commercial flight services or reduce scheduled air services. Leaders will start to leave Australia immediately following the event, on 9 September 2007.
Q:Will the arrival of the APEC Leaders have any impact on commercial flights?
A:No. APEC operations will have no impact on commercial flight services or reduce scheduled air services.
Q: Can I catch a cab to/from Sydney Airport domestic terminals during Friday 7 September - Sunday 9 September?
A: Yes. APEC operations will not reduce existing taxi, bus, train or hire car operations at Sydney Airport. However, the roads leading to and around Sydney Airport will at times be affected by traffic escorts of APEC leaders and ministers, so it will take longer for taxis and cars to reach the airport. If roads are affected due to traffic escorts, then you can expect delays. If you are travelling to or from Sydney Airport, allow yourself extra time.
