As previously announced, our international keynote presenter this year is Ms Liz Scott Gibson. Liz is very well known in the interpreting field as a consummate professional in BSL/English interpreting and in International Sign interpreting. She is the Director of Deaf Action in Scotland and in 2005 she was elected the inaugural President of the World Association of Sign Language Interpreters. She was also the founding President of the European Forum of Sign Language Interpreters.

Liz pioneered television interpreting in the UK; is a former visiting lecturer in interpreting at Durham University and Herriot Watt University in the UK; and has been involved in training, giving lectures, and seminars for sign language interpreters in Europe; Africa; Australia; the U.S.A and Japan. In addition to her work as an interpreter and an interpreter educator, Liz was a member of the editorial team for the BSL/English Dictionary, and has been a member of various government and parliamentary working groups on BSL, sign linguistics, and developing training / qualifications for BSL tutors. We are indeed fortunate to have her join us at the ITW in 2008.

We are delighted to announce that we received an overwhelming number of abstracts for presentation at the ITW this year, and we are in the process this week of advising people of the outcomes of their submissions. We expect to be able to release the ITW 2008 program to you within the next fortnight.

The ITW has become an annual event not to be missed by those in the signed language interpreter education and training field in Australasia and Oceania. Critical to its success is the willing and active participation of educators from around the nation and other parts of the world. We hope to see interpreter educators representing all states of Australia, as well as colleagues from other countries around the world, in Darwin, NT, Australia in September for the ITW, and the ASLIA National Conference!

Best wishes,

Karen Bontempo & Marcel Leneham
