POLICY ON THE SELECTION OF AUSLAN INTERPRETERS FOR
NATIONAL AND / OR INTERNATIONAL EVENTS

 

A. RATIONALE

The Australian Sign Language Interpreters' Association (ASLIA) is the professional association representing Auslan Interpreters and exists to promote recognition of the professional status of interpreters.

While this policy is to be employed by ASLIA members, it could also be used as a guideline or set of suggestions for non-members.

The purpose of this policy is to provide guidance for those who wish -to employ an Auslan interpreter for a national or international event, such as a conference or cultural event.

B. POLICY


1.1 Detailed below are the minimum skills and experience, which are expected of the Interpreter
1.1.1. NAATI Interpreter level accreditation (formerly Level 3)
1.1.2. Previous state / national and international event interpreting experience
1.1.3. Previous experience interpreting at Board and committee meetings
1.1.4. Experience and knowledge of team interpreting and techniques of prompting
1.1.5. Member of the Australian Sign Language Interpreters' Association (ASLIA)

2.1 Interpreters are expected to abide by the ASLIA Code of Ethics.

3.1 Recruitment should be by open advertisement with a copy of the advertisement distributed to ASLIA and each state association of ASLIA.

3.2. State associations of ASLIA will accept responsibility for the distribution of the advertisement to all members.

3.3. Expressions of Interest shall be submitted in writing addressing the minimum Selection Criteria and stating reasons why the applicant considers him or herself suitable for the position.

3.4. Employers are expected to negotiate a contract specifying terms and conditions of employment.

3.4.1 A copy of the suggested ASLIA contract of employment is available from the ASLIA Secretary, upon request.

3.5. An interpreter with experience of interpreting at national or international events, who is also a member of ASLIA, should be included on the selection panel.
