Current Interpreting Figures

Accredited Practioners:

Number of accredited practitioners in Auslan/English interpreting at 31 July 2006 are
Total (national):

Paraprofessional = 678;

Interpreter = 104

Research, as well as anecdotal evidence, seems to suggest approx. 250-300 of these currently work as interpreters.

Unaccredited Practioners

Unfortunately we don't have any accurate figures on unaccredited practitioners in the industry, however anecdotal evidence suggests the majority of these work in education settings (primary and secondary school most frequently as teacher aides/interpreters) which is of some concern to ASLIA.

Nomenclature

The nomenclature for the interpreting profession is:

  • NAATI "Level 3" is now referred to as the "Interpreter" level
  • NAATI "Level 2" is now referred to as the "Para-Professional " level

ASLIA Membership

Australia.
