Kathy Walsh was a well-respected interpreting practitioner who was passionate about the provision of quality communication access through quality Auslan-English interpreting as well as being equally passionate about supporting new interpreters to hone their craft and extend their skills. She was a mentor to many new interpreters. Sadly, Kathy passed away in 2012.
Her close friend, Eve Hedley, established the Kathy Walsh Memorial Sponsorship (KWMS) in 2014 in order to provide support to newer interpreters to attend the ASLIA National Conference (ANC). The KWMS is open to all ASLIA members who are Auslan-English interpreters with NAATI Paraprofessional accreditation and to all SLIANZ members who are NZSL-English interpreters and hold a Diploma of Sign Language Interpreting or Bachelor of Arts NZSL-English interpreting.
