ASLIA Exectuive Strategic Planning Retreat 2007 Sydney
The Australian Sign Language Interpreters' Association (ASLIA National) is a non-profit body representing the needs and interests of Auslan (Australian Sign Language) and Relay (Deaf) Interpreters in Australia. Our association is comprised of a National Executive, a National Representative Council and branches in most states and territories.
ASLIA provides a platform for the views of sign language interpreters throughout the nation on a variety of issues, including training, ongoing professional development, recruitment, working conditions, salaries, and the provision of services within the sign language interpreting industry.
Our industry is very small and ASLIA receives no sponsorship or support from any stakeholder. We are self-funded from membership dues, fundraising, consultative & project management fees and via fees to members for professional development activities.
The Australian Sign Language Interpreters Association (ASLIA) has been in existence in various forms at state level for approximately 20 years, and the current national membership stands at approx. 250.
The formalized roles of an accreditation authority for Auslan interpreters and an association for practitioners have supported the professionalisation of the field in Australia in recent years.
(See Napier (2004) for a more detailed discussion of the profession, training and accreditation of interpreters in Australia compared with the UK and USA.)
ASLIA currently has five state branches: New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania, and Western Australia and is a member the World Association of Sign Language Interpreters (WASLI).
