Deafblind Interpreting Workshop

Hosted by Able Australia

28/11/2018 to 28/11/2018 | Starts: 6:00 pm | Ends: 9:00 pm | Venue: St Lucia Community Hall Ironside Park 27 Guilfoyle Street Saint Lucia, QLD 4067

Today there are close to 300,000 people living with dual sensory loss (hearing and vision) in Australia. This number is expected to rise to over 1 million by 2050. This increase together with the recent introduction of government schemes such as the National Disability Insurance Scheme has resulted in unprecedented demand for interpreters with the skills and knowledge required to work with deafblind clients.

Join Dennis from Able Australia to gain insight into the deafblind world and learn all you need to know to adapt your interpreting to meet the needs of deafblind clients.

This training session will incorporate:

  • Deafblind world experience
  • Responsibilities of interpreters in deafblind settings
  • All methods of communication used by deafblind people
  • How to convert a visual language into a tactile language including:
    – Turn taking
    – Questions directed to deafblind people
    – Minimal pairs
    – Numbers
