Interpreters in Educational Settings Workshop – 12pm-4pm
PART 1
Topic: Making Meaning Visible: Linguistic Decision-Making in Educational Interpreting with Stef Linder
Participants will:
- Examine the interpreter’s role in supporting meaning in classroom settings
- Analyse how linguistic choices impact deaf students’ understanding and participation
- Apply Constructed Action (CA) and Constructed Dialogue (CD)
- Adjust linguistic strategies to improve clarity in classroom interpreting
Learner takeaways:

Topic: Making Waves in the Classroom: AI, Access and Educational Interpreting with Christy Filipich
Participants will:
- Explore practical uses of AI and digital tools in educational interpreting
- Consider how these tools may support Deaf student access across subject areas
- Examine risks, limits, and ethical questions
- Practise making student-centred decisions about when and how to use these tools

Allies and First Nations Workshop – 2pm-4pm
Topic: Blak Auslan An interactive workshop exploring Blak Deaf identity, culture, and communication through Auslan signs with Joanna Agius
Participants will:
- learn how culture influences visual language, connection, and inclusive communication practices.
- Gain understanding of Blak Deaf culture and experiences
- Learn culturally respectful communication strategies
- Build awareness of inclusive and accessible practices
- Develop practical Auslan and visual communication skills

- Blak Deaf identity and community
- Blak Auslan signs and communication
- Cultural respect and inclusion
- Challenges and representation of Deaf Aboriginal people
- Interactive Auslan activities and discussion
