  • ASLITAQ - 2025 Safe Space - What does this look like for Deaf Interpreters

ASLITAQ – 2025 Safe Space – What does this look like for Deaf Interpreters

    $80.00 (member price: $40.00)
To acknowledge the importance of mental health, ASLITA will be providing two PDs throughout the Mental Health Awareness week (4th – 11th October) that are specifically tailored towards the aspects of interpreters and translators’ perspectives, experiences and responsibilities that can differ. Both of these workshops will establish a safe and confidential space for participants so that our presenters can pass on their knowledge to help interpreters look after themselves.
‘Safe Space – What does this look like for Deaf Interpreters?’ is open to Deaf Interpreters and Deaf RPTs only. For this PD, we are fortunate to invite two wonderfully experienced Deaf professionals who have worked within the mental health sector for many years. Irene Holub is based in Australia and has a wealth of knowledge as a Deaf Counsellor and founder of AuslanSoul. We also have Herbert Klein who will be joining us from the U.K. in order to provide his expertise and advice on navigating through the mental health space within the NHS (National Health Service) in England. Both presenters will be discussing the following topics below and participants will have the opportunity to ask questions.
The informal discussion between Irene, Herbert and the ASLITA facilitator will be delving deeper into the topics below:
This PD will not be recorded and no Auslan interpreters will be provided. This PD will be delivered in Auslan/BSL.
Cost:  ASLITA members $40, non members – $80

  • Ethics: A Masterclass for Deaf and Hearing Interpreters and Translators - ACT

Ethics: A Masterclass for Deaf and Hearing Interpreters and Translators – ACT

    $70.00 (member price: $35.00)

This masterclass (a repeat of the class held in Parramatta in May) is aimed at experienced, NAATI-certified (including CPI/CPDI), or NAATI-recognised Deaf and hearing interpreters and translators. We recommend you have at least two years of experience as an interpreter or translator, although more recently NAATI certified/recognised interpreters and translators are welcome. (This is not the right class for interpreting or Auslan students, or those working in roles outside of interpreting/translating).

Join Natt Kull and Chevoy Sweeney for an in-depth all-day session which will expand your understanding of the nuances of professional ethics, and develop your ability and confidence in putting this into practice in your everyday work, even in complex situations. There will be plenty of opportunities to discuss issues and consider options for putting ethics into practice across a range of settings.

The masterclass will be run in English and is available in person only.

Interpreters will be provided if required – please note this in your registration or email us on nswinfo@aslita.au.

    • Morning tea and afternoon tea will be provided – please let us know by 14 October if you have any dietary requirements.
    •  Please bring your own lunch (no nuts please) or plan to purchase your lunch at a nearby venue  (eg Brumby’s Bakery, Breizh Cafe, Edgar’s Inn)

    · The venue is wheelchair accessible; please let us know if you require any reasonable adjustments by emailing us at nswinfo@aslita.au

    Turn Fear into Fabulous!

Facilitated by: none other than the fabulous David McQuiggin.

Many Auslan interpreters feel under-confident when working into English — even though, for most of us, it’s our primary daily language, if not our mother tongue. Yet, with access improving for our Deaf community, the demand for skilled voice interpreters is higher than ever.

If you’re one of the many interpreters who find voicing assignments intimidating, you’re not alone — and this workshop is here to help.

Through structured, practical, language-work-based activities, you’ll:

    • Engage with authentic Auslan source texts
    • Analyse contextual meaning
    • Explore a range of English renderings for clarity and impact
    • Practise producing confident, intentional English interpretations

By expanding your range of English vocabulary, you can more effectively match the tone, register, and context of your clients — ensuring their message is delivered with accuracy, authenticity, and respect.

Please bring a secondary recording device to fully participate in activities.

Take your interpreting to the next level — and let your voice do our community justice.
