  • Mathematics and Auslan – Attending

    $200.00 (member price: $100.00)

This workshop will build upon the presentation given at the ASLIA National Conference 2018. Participants will be introduced to current research in the field, have the opportunity to tackle some of the challenges presented when interpreting in maths classrooms, and learn some new interpreting skills whilst having some fun. Participants will also reflect upon interpreting scenarios from the past, consider the working relationship between teacher and interpreter and will be given the opportunity to practice interpreting both into Auslan and into English.

This workshop will be worthwhile for anyone working with deaf students who use Auslan in a primary or high school setting including:

    • NAATI credentialled Interpreters and Interpreters in Training
    • Teacher Aide Educational Interpreters
    • Teacher Aide Auslan Language Models
    • Teachers or other staff working with deaf students in the area of mathematics
    • Advisory Visiting Teachers (Hearing Impairment) who support deaf students who use Auslan.

  • Queering the Terp

    $50.00 (member price: $25.00)

Interpreters are now working in a more diverse range of settings, and the deaf queer community is just one part of the community that is coming out and being interpreted more. ASLIA NSW and Deaf Rainbow want to provide a space where the queer community can openly discuss their history, language and topics of importance so that interpreters have more in their toolkit and are better prepared when working with someone who identifies as queer.

  • “I felt yuck about that job”: Unpicking the Layers of Difficult Interpreting

    $100.00 (member price: $100.00)

Dr Rachel McKee is an Associate Professor in the School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies at Victoria University of Wellington and Programme Director of NZSL Studies.

Rachel was in the first group of NZSL interpreters to be trained in 1985. Working as a community interpreter motivated her to study sign language and interpreting in the USA from 1988, where she became a certified ASL interpreter while completing a PhD in Applied Linguistics at UCLA. Rachel returned to NZ in 1992, working with her husband David McKee to establish training programmes for sign language interpreters, Deaf teachers of NZSL, and hearing NZSL learners. Her research publications have spanned the grammar and lexicon of NZSL, sociolinguistic variation, interpreting, deaf children in education, Deaf community history, and language policy and planning for NZSL. Rachel was the inaugural president of SLIANZ (founded 1995), and she has valued close connections with Auslan interpreting colleagues and researchers throughout her career.
