Merie Spring is a seasoned interpreter that was one of the founding members of ASLIA-Q. With extensive experience in interpreting, she has become a trusted resource for Auslan and Deaf Interpreters seeking professional development. Come and join our Introduction to Court Interpreting PD for an interactive presentation in how you can prepare yourself for your first court/legal booking.
Content topics include:
- Understanding the Courtroom Environment:
- Providing insights into the physical layout of courtrooms, including seating arrangements, lighting, and acoustics.
- Interpreter Placement, & Terminology used in the courtroom.
- Discussing optimal interpreter placement within the courtroom. This includes considerations for visibility, proximity to legal professionals, and maintaining neutrality.
- Approaching the Court:
- Guiding interpreters on how to introduce themselves to judges, lawyers, and other court personnel.
- Oath or Affirmation:
- Covering the interpreter’s role during the swearing-in process. Interpreters must accurately convey the oath or affirmation to Deaf individuals.
- Q & A Session:
- Facilitating an interactive Q & A session, addressing common challenges faced by interpreters in court.
- Participants can seek clarification and share experiences.
