Come and join our Introduction to Court Interpreting PD for an interactive presentation in how you can prepare yourself for your first court/legal booking.

Content of Professional Development (PD): Introduction to Court Interpreting:

  1. Understanding the Courtroom Environment:
    • Providing insights into the physical layout of courtrooms, including seating arrangements, lighting, and acoustics.
  2. Interpreter Placement, & Terminology used in the courtroom.
    • Discussing optimal interpreter placement within the courtroom. This includes considerations for visibility, proximity to legal professionals, and maintaining neutrality.
  3. Approaching the Court:
    • Guiding interpreters on how to introduce themselves to judges, lawyers, and other court personnel.
  4. Oath or Affirmation:
    • Covering the interpreter’s role during the swearing-in process. Interpreters must accurately convey the oath or affirmation to Deaf individuals.
  5. Q & A Session:
    • Facilitating an interactive Q & A session, addressing common challenges faced by interpreters in court.
    • Participants can seek clarification and share experiences.

Target audience: Experienced CPI, recently accredited CI, DI
