Say What Now?! Making friends with A>E Interpreting (NSW)

    Turn Fear into Fabulous!

Facilitated by: none other than the fabulous David McQuiggin.

Many Auslan interpreters feel under-confident when working into English — even though, for most of us, it’s our primary daily language, if not our mother tongue. Yet, with access improving for our Deaf community, the demand for skilled voice interpreters is higher than ever.

If you’re one of the many interpreters who find voicing assignments intimidating, you’re not alone — and this workshop is here to help.

Through structured, practical, language-work-based activities, you’ll:

    • Engage with authentic Auslan source texts
    • Analyse contextual meaning
    • Explore a range of English renderings for clarity and impact
    • Practise producing confident, intentional English interpretations

By expanding your range of English vocabulary, you can more effectively match the tone, register, and context of your clients — ensuring their message is delivered with accuracy, authenticity, and respect.

Please bring a secondary recording device to fully participate in activities.

Take your interpreting to the next level — and let your voice do our community justice.

    *Webinar* Reading Minds, Reading Signs

    $40.00 (member price: $20.00)

Theory of Mind (ToM) is a crucial cognitive skill that underpins communication, social interaction, and learning. For Deaf students, differences in access to incidental learning and social cues make ToM an important consideration for educational interpreters.

Join us as Karen O’Reilly explores the concept of Theory of Mind and discuss how it relates to our work. This session covers:

    • The foundations of ToM and its development in children and adolescents.
    • How ToM shapes interactions, learning experiences, and peer relationships.
    • Strategies to support perspective-taking, inferencing, and comprehension in interpreted settings.
    • Practical applications—how an understanding of ToM can enhance our role as interpreters.

Whether you’re looking to build on existing knowledge or gain fresh insights, this webinar will provide valuable perspectives and tools to support Deaf learners in their cognitive and social development.

Join us for an engaging and thought-provoking discussion on the role of Theory of Mind in educational interpreting!

The Interpreting in Educational Settings (IES) committee hosted this live streamed event on 21 May 2025.

By viewing this PD, you will be enhancing your knowledge across Standards 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 1.4, 3.2, 3.7 and 3.8 of the Professional Standards for Educational Interpreters
