Supporting Wellbeing through Reflective Practice & Practitioner Partnerships
The ASLITA Mental Health Interpreting Committee invites you to our upcoming PD!
Part 1: Reflective Practice (Zoie Nott)
In this workshop, Zoie explores how interpreters can sustain their wellbeing while delivering high-quality work. This interactive 45-minute session introduces the concept of reflective practice, why it matters, and how it can be used before, during, and after assignments to strengthen both professional skills and personal resilience. Participants will learn practical strategies for reflection, see a simple reflective conversation in action, and take away self-care tips tailored to the unique demands of interpreting.
Part 2: Practitioner Partnerships (Christina Clarke)
This presentation will provide an introduction and summary of a partnership (collaborative) approach between mental health professionals and interpreters – exploring what works and providing recommendations for practice. The presentation will also focus on the unique stresses and emotional impacts interpreters face in challenging contexts, exploring practices to safeguard personal wellbeing.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will gain an understanding of what a partnership (collaborative) approach between mental health professionals and interpreters entails, why it is essential, and how it fosters more effective and supportive working relationships and client outcomes.
- Attendees will learn a practical strategy to establish, nurture, and maintain effective partnerships with mental health professionals.
- The presentation will encourage participants to reflect on their current practices and attitudes regarding working in partnership, identifying areas for growth and adaptation to better serve clients and themselves.
- Recognise the importance of personal wellbeing and how to support this for continued professional growth and reduced professional isolation.

ASLITAQ – 2025 Safe Space – What does this look like for Deaf Interpreters
$80.00 (member price: $40.00)To acknowledge the importance of mental health, ASLITA will be providing two PDs throughout the Mental Health Awareness week (4th – 11th October) that are specifically tailored towards the aspects of interpreters and translators’ perspectives, experiences and responsibilities that can differ. Both of these workshops will establish a safe and confidential space for participants so that our presenters can pass on their knowledge to help interpreters look after themselves.‘Safe Space – What does this look like for Deaf Interpreters?’ is open to Deaf Interpreters and Deaf RPTs only. For this PD, we are fortunate to invite two wonderfully experienced Deaf professionals who have worked within the mental health sector for many years. Irene Holub is based in Australia and has a wealth of knowledge as a Deaf Counsellor and founder of AuslanSoul. We also have Herbert Klein who will be joining us from the U.K. in order to provide his expertise and advice on navigating through the mental health space within the NHS (National Health Service) in England.
